Photographer Interviews – Milk & Honey

INTERVIEW WITH LISA FROM MILK & HONEY PHOTOGRAPHY

Describe your Style:

Calm, peaceful, I love classic items, anything rustic or vintage, anything pretty. I love patiently waiting for newborn smiles! I LOVE Maternity & Newborn & Baby photography, because of my difficulty starting my own family. I love to celebrate the creation of a new family or the addition of a new family member. It is my passion.

What was your biggest “A-ha” moment?

To care less about what everyone around me is doing and to focus on my own dreams & goals. It really only happened recently. Im learning to block out the negative noise, to look internally for my own creativity and to continue to show my love & my heart in my work.

What is your education? Degree? Self-taught? Workshops?

Self taught, however I do feel like I was able to stand on the shoulders of giants to help me learn. I have made some amazing photographer friends who have helped me and who I admire & respect. Many will be featured in upcoming interviews, because it helps me explain my journey as a photographer too. I have had the pleasure of attending Baby as Art, Stephanie Robins Craft Baby & Andrea Joki’s workshops. All amazing & inspirational women who I feel honoured to have met & know.

What made you decide to become a photographer?

It happened accidentally really. I took really bad pictures, like really really bad. I started researching & googling “how to take better photos of your kids” and became OBSESSED with learning. I fell in love with the learning & self growth that photography has given me.

How long have you had your Photography Business?

1.5 years 🙂

What would be the hardest part of having a photography business?

Not working 24/7. Im a perfectionist, and will work myself to exhaustion. I have had to learn to be kinder & more patient with myself.

What would be your favorite part?

Helping create art that will be heirlooms for families, snuggling sweet babies & newborns & sharing in the excitement with expectant mothers. It is my joy.

What has been your most memorable shoot & why?

I had a session where I had a newborn that would not sleep, yup 4 hour session and would only sleep in dads arms. I learned to adapt, to go with the flow and not fight it. We ended up with a gorgeous session that was not my usual style, but I love the images regardless. It taught me that even things don’t go your way it is your choice how you respond to the situation & to make it the best experience you can!

When You aren’t doing Photography how do you escape & unwind?

Playing with my sweet 2.5 year old, he LOVES to go swimming so I am trying to take him weekly, My hubby and I are working on a scheduled date night weekly too!

How do you create balance between your Business Life & family Time?

isn’t that the million dollar question?!! Im working on it, I don’t think you ever arrive at balance, its a constant thing to be balancing your life. I have been scheduling my work more, getting off facebook & spending time with people in real life.

What do you wish you had known prior to starting your own photography business and any advice for those starting out?

How much work it is!!! I LOVE what I do, but I under estimated the time it would take to be where I want to be. I work hard & I play hard. Learn the business side as much as the photography side!!!

Watch for an upcoming post on contracts, and a great resource for those just getting into the business!

Is there anything you would have done differently in your photographic career?

Nope, everything I have done has led me to where I am today 🙂

Your Favorite Image? And why is it your favorite

I LOVE your edits and the soft colors you use. I do appreciate everyone having their own style, etc. But, have you ever considered selling your actions? I would LOVE editing pointers from you!
