Advising Clients What to Wear for a Photo Shoot Using Style and Select with Holly Mueller & Melissa Grindstaff

One of the first questions new clients ask is what to wear for a photo shoot. The Style and Select service makes styling your clients with carefully coordinated outfits easy and convenient.

Introduction (1:53)

How did Style and Select come to be? (4:46)

We had to extensively guide our clients on what to wear for a photo shoot, so we thought helping other photographers to do this too would be useful.

How often are items refreshed? (10:14)

Constantly – we are scouring retailers and adding items every day. We are very active on social media to show how these clothing choices look on ordinary people of all shapes and sizes.

How does the service help clients decide what to wear for a photo shoot? (12:55)

You can give clients a styling code and allow them to style themselves, or you can style a client yourself and send that as a guide to your clients. The client can shop from the results either way. You can also include your own client closet.

What are the essential items when starting a client closet? (17:46)

Start small with accessories – hats, headbands, etc. Then add items in neutral colours, like size medium dresses with tie waists that can accommodate a wide variety of sizes. Get neutral kids’ pieces from big box stores.

Which sites can you recommend that are budget-friendly? (21:10)

See resource guide.

Are there scam sites to avoid? (22:32)

There are lots. Check their social media and reviews for client feedback. Boutiques will refer to real people with real addresses. Be wary of any sites with heads cut off.

How do you decide which clothing sites to include? (25:33)

We partner with both big box stores and boutiques. We choose retailers that can maintain stock levels, and that carry flattering clothing that photographs well.

Do people ask you to source clothing from photos? (28:56)

Yes, but the true value is discovering more stores, and seeing the choices together.

What is your pick for hit dress of the season? (32:39)

Last year it was a mustard dress from Aces. The Vici Anika dress is really popular right now with photographers because it is so versatile.

Do most of your male clients follow the suggestions? (36:33)

Men tend to want to stay in jeans. Often having them be able to wear one thing of their own allows you to make choices for them otherwise.

Where can we find out more about Style and Select? (38:59)

What are you creatively curious about? (40:29)

Photography education, and creating balance in life.
